His main areas of research are antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial therapy and bacterial zoonoses. Present research primarily focuses on epidemiology and control of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria of clinical relevance such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) and Escherichia coli producing extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL). In recent years he has developed a strong interest in optimization of antimicrobial therapy for reducing the impact on selection of bacterial resistance. Prof Guardabassi has written over 100 international publications since 1998, including 3 book chapters, 67 articles in peer-reviewed journals and more than 30 oral contributions to international conferences. He is the first editor of a book on antimicrobial use in animals published by Blackwell in 2008.
